General Information
 San
Carlos is the seat of the "Department of San Carlos"
in the Ñuble
Province (Ñuble is also the name of a river
between San Carlos and nearby Chillán--see Chilean
Rivers ) of the
Bío-Bío
Region in Chile.
San Carlos is a beautiful
southern town located in the middle of
Chile's
agricultural heartland about 365 kms. south of Santiago. It sits on an alluvial
plain between nearby Chillán and Perquelauquén river.
It was founded by a Spaniard, don
José Joaquín
del Pino de Rozas y Negrete (in Spanish) on July 3, 1800.
The town lies right in the middle of the long
and narrow territory that constitutes "continental" Chile; (our country has
lands in the South Pacific and claims a sector in the Antarctica).

San Carlos is a bustling market
town of 50,000 (census 2000) people. Its surrounding countryside is
reputed for its bountiful production of various crops such as sugar beet, rice
and corn as well as orchards (apple, grapes, berries, and more recently, kiwi).
Agro industry --particularly vegetable and fruit
packing-- constitute one of
the main industrial activities in San Carlos.
Notably, San Carlos is the birthplace of one of the most widely recognized
names in folk music in Chile and abroad,
Violeta
Parra. She has long been acclaimed
as a great folk artist, author, painter, researcher and singer.
The
house (see picture on the left) where this famous artist was born is located in El Roble # 535-531,
San Carlos, Provincia de Ñuble. It was declared National
Monument by Law Decree 668 on September 29, 1992. (See
other Chilean folk artists)
In addition, San Carlos
is also the birthplace of several
other internationally, well known artists. Among them we
find painters such as
Hernán
Gazmuri and a popular band from
the 70's, Los Angeles Negros.
Quirel Park and Pond

This is a quiet and serene place which "sancarlinos"
visit on a nice day, on week-ends or simply go for a walk in the spring and lazy summer evenings. It features a man-made pond with rental boats.
Twinning
San Carlos is twinned with the
Spanish city of
Baena
located in
Andalucia, southern
Spain,
in the
province of Córdoba. San Carlos' founder José Joaquín del
Pino de Rozas y Negrete was born in Baena.
