Fall 2009 Events Overview

September 14 : Karl Jacoby . This award-winning writer's most recent book, Shadows at Dawn (Penguin Press, 2008), explores the 1871 Camp Grant Massacre in Arizona, in which a posse comprised of Americans, Mexicans, and Tohono O'odham Indians killed 150 Apaches. The historical event is narrated from four different angles, each centering on a community involved in the massacre. Jacoby is an associate professor of history at Brown University whose previous book won the Littleton-Griswold Prize and the George Perkins Marsh Prize. Co-sponsored by CLEC.

September 15 (postponed) : Marie Myung-Ok Lee . Her novel, Somebody's Daughter (Beacon Press, 2005), was a Booklist Best Book of the Year and an AAUP “Best of the Best.” She has published five award-winning young adult novels, and her short fiction and nonfiction have appeared in The Kenyon Review , Triquarterly , The New York Times , and The Washington Post . She is writer-in-residence at Brown University . Co-sponsored by CLEC.

 

Nov. 5 , 2009: GSU welcomes author Dorothy Allison. Her international acclaim began in 1992 with her novel Bastard Out of Carolina, which was an immediate popular and critical success. Subsequent best-selling books include a collection of essays, Skin: Talking about Sex, Class and Literature ; a memoir, Two or Three Things I Know for Sure ; and a second novel, Cavedweller . A new novel, She Who , will be published later this year.

The event is hosted by the Dept. of Writing & Linguistics and made possible with financial support from the Campus Life Enrichment Committee and the Dept. of Writing & Linguistics. Co-sponsors include the Center for Women & Gender Studies, The Multicultural Student Center, and the Dept. of Literature & Philosophy.

A craft talk will take place at 4:00 pm in the College of Education Room 1115. The reading will take place at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center.

Nov. 11, 2009: Poet Kevin Prufer. The most recent of his four poetry collections, National Anthem , was named one of the five best poetry books of 2008 by Publisher's Weekly , and best book of the year by Virginia Quarterly Review . Among his many awards are three Pushcart prizes and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He is the editor of the literary journal Pleiades . Co-sponsored by the Georgia Poetry Circuit.
