My Summary Essay

Well, the spring semester is almost over and it will soon be fall before we know it. This semester has been interesting to learn about popular culture and how it affects our lives in many ways that we tend to overlook.  In this class, we have written a few papers on different topics among popular culture issues. Before this class I really didn’t realize how much of an impact that popular culture has on our lives until we started discussing how issues such as violence and crime can be traced back to television shows and other important parts of our culture. Also, I didn’t really realize the difference until we read the book Common Culture by Michael Petracca and Madeleine Sorapure. The following are some essays that I have written about popular culture.

The first essay was an illustrative essay on virtual product placement and how it shouldn’t take complete control of the way we watch television. Virtual product placement can be a good thing to do in recent shows or sports events, but I think that tampering with films that have been broadcasted before the actual product has been placed onto the market seems to cross the line. Traditional commercials give you a sort of break to do things and still be able to watch the show too.

I also wrote a definition essay on privacy and how much it has changed in the past ten years. I can remember my grandpa telling me back when he was young that his family would never have to lock there doors if they left or when they went to bed at night. Since catastrophes such as 9/11 everything has changed. The government has started invading people’s privacy to keep something like this from happening again, but sometimes I think they use that as an excuse to invade our privacy.

Another essay that I have written is a comparison and contrast essay on a person’s online personality versus their face-to-face personality. I found when I wrote this essay that there are many similarities and differences in the two personalities. Some differences are a person seems to be bolder online than they are face-to-face, you don’t really get know what kind of person they truly are by looking at just a profile that they have created with info about themselves.

The final essay that I wrote was an argument essay on taking online courses or getting an entire education from an online institution. First of all, it’s not a good idea to get an entire education from an internet institution because there have been so many scams reported about people receiving fake degrees from online institutions. I also would never take an online course due to a personal experience I once had. When I was in high school, I took and online course and had many problems such as poor ability to communicate with the instructor, often had technical difficulties with the school system’s internet and computers, and other problems also.

As I have stated, popular culture has many influences on our daily lives. I have enjoyed reading about popular culture and its interesting studies on how it affects our lives, and I am sure that popular culture will continue to be a key component of the lives of us all.
