Teaching Experience

 

1994 - present: Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA. Associate Professor of Freshman Composition, Creative Writing and English as a Second Language. Courses include ESL 0092 and 0093, WRIT 1101, ENG 1101, ENG 1102, Selected Topics WRIT 3030 and WRIT 5631/G. In the ESL classes all four skills are emphasized in small classes with a great deal of one on one tuition. In the Writing classes, emphasis is placed on instructing students in the rudiments of essay writing based on their own experiences and on popular culture, including short stories, novels, plays and poems. The teaching of the research paper is also covered along with grammar and punctuation rules. The Writing 5631/G course introduces students to the crime fiction genre and gives them practice in writing several mystery/thriller short stories.

 

August 1996: Instructor at York University, York, England in the intensive summer program for international students.

 

1991-1994: Teikyo Post University, Waterbury, CT. Instructor of ESL. Courses included Reading, Writing, Grammar and Listening in an intensive ESL program. Responsible for writing syllabi, devising curricula, ordering materials and coordinating with other university departments.


1992-1994: Quinnipiac College, Hamden, CT. Adjunct Instructor of ESL. Taught composition, structure and reading comprehension. Worked with the regular English department and wrote my own materials.


1987-1991: Cheshire Academy, Cheshire, CT. English teacher of grades 10-12.

Taught Pre-College Composition and a Senior Elective Mystery Novel Course. Senior Shakespeare Tragedies, British Literature, Beowulf - Present Day

Initiated a successful ESL program. Responsible for curricula planning, student teaching, ordering materials, and working in close conjunction with three other ESL teachers.

1982-1985: Coordinated an English for Specific Purposes program at the Hamad Hospital, Doha, Qatar, Arabian Gulf. Tested students, arranged timetables, planned classes and devised specific curricula.


1982-1985: ESL instructor of evening classes of multi-national adults of all levels at the British Council, Doha. Taught all four skills - Composition, Reading, Listening, and Speaking.


1982-1984: Adjunct ESL instructor at Doha University for Women

 

1981-1982: Organized innovative ESL classes for business personnel at the Dubai Petroleum Company, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Arabian Gulf.
