In its broadest sense, Writing #4 asks you to do some research for and think deeply and critically about some form of cultural othering. Remember, as with everything we have written, I want these papers to mean something to you. This is a 5-7 page paper, and you will need 3-5 sources for it: 1 book source, 1 journal source, and 1 QUALITY Internet source; other sources might be interviews, E-mail list exchanges, film or television sources.
To narrow the paper, think again about what you know about this world, what of the world has touched you and how you walk through this world. You can decide to expand the work you did with writings #2 or #3, or you might realize the work you did with writings #2 and #3 opened up new areas for you to research and explore. The Parillo essay on the the causes of prejudice is a touchstone for you... you may use that as a source, or not, depending on the paper you propose and develop.
If, however, you are having difficulty determining a topic, you might want to return to the Parillo essay and see which of the theories of the social and cultural causes of prejudice he discusses seems most important to you; you could begin writing your way into this paper by pursuing the sources he cites. One of the reasons for using the Parillo essay in class is that he provided an extensive notes section with references to other works and authors-- use this as a starting point for the research component of this paper.
I will be reviewing writing log #7 and your class freewrites to think about how I can help you in with the thinking and writing of this paper. In the meantime, you need to submit a formal proposal to me-- remember, same rules as last time:
Proposal for this paper. In the proposal, provide this information:
