Summary Workshop

Since this is one of the first activities of this semester, take the first few moments after forming your workshop groups to introduce yourselves to each other.  Exchange phone numbers-- you need to begin developing a contact base for help with your work in this class.

Stage 1: Reading

  1. Review Summary Description
  2. As a Group, review critical reading and note-taking strategies:

  3. Review article and make notes re: main points necessary for a summary paper
Stage 2: Draft
  1. Brainstorm points that you will include
  2. Find relevant quotations: see Thesis & paragraph development, paraphrasing


Stage 3: Peer Review

  1. Exchange Papers with your partner
  2. Read your partner's paper
  3. As you read, record points that your partners included in their summaries that you did not include in yours
  4. Note each of the points that you both seem to have included
  5. After reading and note-taking, discuss your strategies for writing--  what made each of you decide what was "important" to write about?
