Internet Assignment
Go to one of the computer labs on campus (4th floor of the library, 4th floor of the MCB) and log open the Netscape browser (this will already be loaded on most of the terminals in the library-- usually, all you have to do is sit in front of the computer and there it is!).
First, I want you to get comfortable following links and getting to
different addresses on the Internet. Look at the top of the screen. Do
you see the white bar with the address
http://www.csuohio.edu/english/fill in. That is a URL, a uniform
resource locator. Like an address, that is the place on the Internet
that the file you are reading lives.
I want you to go to a different page by typing in another URL. Just
go to the top bar and type this: http://www.nytimes.com. After you get
there, come back to this page by clicking the back button at the top
left of your screen. Got there and back? Good-- now write down the
name of the site that you visited.
Now, do the same thing again, only this time instead of typing the
address we are going to copy and paste the address at the end of
these instructions.
- To copy, just position your cursor (that's the blinking line
that shows up on the screen and moves when you move your mouse and
click) at the front of the address you want to go to.
- Hold the left mouse button down and drag the mouse to the end of
the address. The address should be highlighted.
- Take your finger off the mouse button.... carefully, make sure the
text stays highlighted.
- Then, go to the top of the screen, click on the word edit in the
upper left corner, then click on copy.
- Now, go to the address bar, delete the address in the bar, and
click the left mouse button to position the cursor at the beginning of
the address bar.
- Go back to edit, click, and click on paste.
- Voi la!! You have copied and pasted an address.

Now that you can copy, paste, and get to different places on the net, I
want you to mail the class with your experience. Look at the top of screen-- Click on "edit" in the upper left hand corner.
At the bottom of the menu that appears, click on preferences.
On the left screen, double click mail and groups, then click on mail server.
On the right side of the screen, set the user name for yourself. (On some of the terminals this requires that you click edit on the right side first). Your CSU account name is the first initial of your first name, a period, and your last name (with NO spaces!!), followed by @popmail.csuohio.edu. For example, my user id is l.amy@popmail.csuohio.edu.
Click OK
The mail screen should open up: now, check your messages by clicking on get mail.
A dialogue box asking for your password will appear-- this password is your birthday (six digits-- month, day, year, where January would be 01, the 4 would be 04, etc.) and the last two digits of your zip code.
Now,
go to our
class homepage and click the mail link. In the subject line, type "Did
It!!" In the body of the text, express some emotion about using the
Internet for class.
Now, I want you to check your mail. You should have the message you sent to class in your box (unless you have not given me an address and you are not on the mail list). I want you to
e-mail yourself, check your mail, and print your mail.
Bring the print out of your mail to yourself and the names of the
sites you visited to class on Monday. You can exchange these for a
prize!
Salome Freewrite
After our class discussions, think about what role you think desire plays in Salome-- give me a page or so on this (informal).
The freewrites I handed back to you on an issue from The Crucible serve as a diagnostic for your critical writing ability. I would like to schedule conferences with you next week to discuss the direction your writing for this class might take-- please make sure to budget 15 minutes for me between Feb. 22nd and Feb. 26th!
