September 11-12, 2009
At a glance
This two-day event deepens understanding of the Scots-Irish as a vital American presence: past, present and future. The venue is the Coastal Georgia Center, Georgia Southern University's conference and teaching satellite adjoining Savannah's historic district.
Friday, the first day, features a scholarly symposium (registration fee required): several world-class scholars from various disciplines will present seminal work in Scots-Irish Studies. Friday evening sees a concert where acclaimed instrumentalists and singers highlight the rich Scots-Irish patrimony ($10/ticket; free with symposium registration).
Saturday continues our scholarly endeavors, enhanced by a concluding roundtable discussion focusing on the fringe and frontier experiences of the Ulster-Scots in the Far North and the Deep South.
The Conference program will consist of the presentation of a number of papers which will collectively constitute a composite picture of Scots-Irish life on the frontier. The overall approach will be multi-disciplinary, highlighting the role of individuals, presenting archaeological findings, and offering insightful analysis of literature and culture.
