APA Format Check Sheet for Research Proposals
All psychology papers must be written in the format of the Publication Manual of the APA (5th ed.). Before you turn in your paper, check each section against the manual or your handouts using this checklist.

Title should include the main topic, the
relationship between the independent
variables, and subject characteristics (when
appropriate).

materials, procedures, and anticipated
results in no more than 906 characters.

summarize the relevant literature
to develop a background including classic
papers in the field as well as current
publications.

your review and statement of the research
problem. Tie this information together
and state the specific hypotheses of your
research.Your introduction should proceed
from the general to the specific. The
final paragraph must state the purpose
and rationale for the study.

Participants:
Describe participants' demographic characteristics (such
as age, race, gender, etc.), how they
will be selected, previous history, and
incentives to be given, if any.

Materials:
Describe the equipment or survey instruments you will be
using, giving the author's or publisher's
name. Include a copy of the survey
instrument in the appendix. Include a
copy of your informed consent form.

Procedures:
Describe everything you plan to do to select and test the
research participants. Include instructions
you plan to give to participants.
Provide sufficient detail for someone
to replicate the study.

REFERENCE CITATIONS AND LIST: Use
few quotations. Put into your
own words and reference any ideas that
you get from the review of the literature.
You are graded on appropriate referencing,
agreement between text and reference
list, and correct format.

Writing Style: In addition to the
appropriate use of APA format, you will be evaluated
on the consistency of writing style,
sentence structure, grammar, punctuation,
spelling, and physical appearance of
the manuscript.
