Purchase a copy of the SDS as well as the two accompanying pamphletsthe Majors' Finder and the Occupations' Finder at the Bookstore. Take and score the SDS to determine your 3-letter personality type (summary code on p. 10 of the SDS).
Using the Majors'
Finder, locate the major(s) that match exactly your 3-letter personality
type and write these somewhere on your copy of the Majors' Finder.
Next, using, the SDS and the Occupations Finder (OF), identify
the occupations that match exactly your 3-letter personality type.
From these occupations, choose 3 that are of greatest interest
to you and write these somewhere on your copy of the Occupations
Finder.
Note: If none of the occupations under your exact letter code "feels right" as a possible occupation for you, then do the following:
1. Look at all the codes that contain the same letters (in any order) in your original code to see if you can find any better matching occupations.
2. If, after serious reflection, you think that your initial choice is better for you, then stay with your initial occupational preference.
3. Use the the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) to find the titles of 3-5 occupations of greatest interest to you.
4. Read about each of these occupations in the OOH.
5. Select 1-3 occupations from the ones you read about and continue reading below.
After you have identified your 3 occupations, locate a copy of a recent Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). (You can sign out a copy in the Psychology Department Office for one day only, use a copy in the Henderson Library or the Statesboro Library, or access the OOH Website). This book, published annually by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, includes information about job descriptions, education and training requirements, advancement possibilities, salaries, and employment outlooks for some 250 occupations.
Locate your chosen occupation (or a functional substitute) in the OOH by matching the 9-digit number (Directory of Occupational Titles code number) of a given occupation listed in the Occupations Finder with the same 9- digit code listed under the relevant section at the back of the OOH. (If you don't find quite what you are looking for under a particular occupation, be sure to read the section entitled "Related Occupations" at the end of each job description for ideas about related careers to investigate.)
After reflecting on what you have read in the OOH, make a photocopy
of the information regarding 1-3 of the careers you are most interested
in.
