Preferred Career Description and Evaluation Report

Using the OOH, the information you have obtained from class lectures, hand-outs, exercises, and discussions, describe and evaluate your most preferred occupation. Your report should contain the following information (devise appropriate headings for each section to guide the reader):

1. Description of the position (including the usual responsibilities and activities associated with the position)

2. Description of the type of employer you would like to work for(community mental health agency, hospital, self-employment, etc.)

3. How a major in psychology will help you in this career (include specific courses that would be helpful)

4. How a minor or other nonpsychology courses will help you in this career (include specific courses that would be helpful)

5. The type of education or training you might need for this position

6. How your aptitudes, abilities, values, interests, and preferred activities make this a good career choice for you

7. What you will do if your first career choice does not work out (e.g., if you don't get into graduate school or if you find you don't like the work). In other words, describe your "fall-back" position.

Career-Planning Time-Line

1. Devise a personalized time-line that will cover the time from spring term, 1998 until you graduate.

2. Organize your tasks according to academic terms beginning with this spring term (remember to include the summer term).

For each term remaining, specify:

a. the courses you plan to take and your estimated grades in these courses

b. any tasks you need to complete in order to maximize your chances of having the career that you want--e.g., change your major, improve your GPA, enroll in Field Experience or Research Experience, plan to present research at an undergraduate research conference, read about more occupations, conduct more informational interviews, identify graduate programs to apply to, get applications, ready, make arrangements to take the GRE, ask faculty members for recommendations, prepare a personal statement, etc. (The hand-out "Applying to Graduate School: Strategies and Time-Line" identifies many of these tasks and the timing of them).

The due date for this assignment will be announced in class.
