Student Research

 

Undergraduate Research

In the Spring of 2008, I took three students to the Georgia Psychological Society Conference in Macon, GA. They presented their research in the form of an oral talk. A manuscript of their research was submitted and is currently under review.

 

Marcia Tolson-Jones conducted a Directed Research with me, and after much collaboration, her manuscript was published in the 2007 Undergraduate Journal of Psychology at the University of North Carolina. Her article title is Successful Aging in the Minds of College Students.

 

From 1997-2007, I mentored eighteen undergraduate paper presentations, thirty-six poster presentations, three on-line publications, two publications in an undergraduate journal, and one publication in Physiology & Behavior with two undergraduates.

 

Master’s Theses

Keisha Butler presented research from her Master’s Thesis at the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference in Savannah, GA, on March 23, 2001. I nominated her for a Graduate Student Research Award and was delighted when she won for her division: Animal/Biological Research.

1.         In the Spring of 2007, I served on a committee to review a charge of academic misconduct at the request of Dr. Linda Bleiken, Provost.

2.         In the Fall of 2006, I became the IACUC Chair. This term will last for 3 years.

3.         In the Fall of 2007, I presented a workshop in Group Dynamics for the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement.

4.         In the Fall of 2006, I presented Are they learning? How do we know? Can technology help? with Laura Regassa, Rosemarie Stallworth-Clark, and Robby Ambler as part of the Georgia Southern University New Faculty Orientation.

5.         In the Spring of 2005, I served as a member of a committee to enhance research and grant-writing at GSU (invited by Julie Cole of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs). In the Fall of 2005, I served on a panel of researchers who have obtained external grant funding to present Not Your Father’s Grant Writing Workshop to a packed conference room.

6.         In December of 2003, I was invited to join the Environmental Safety Task Force. We met in the same month to discuss the vast scope of this committee, and we continued to meet throughout 2004.

7.         In the Fall of 2005, I presented information on Enhancing Student Learning to new faculty members.

8.         In the spring of 2005, I presented two workshops on creating teaching portfolios at a New Faculty Workshop at the request of Eric Hobson of the CET.

9.         In the Fall of 2003 and 2004, I participated in the New-Faculty Orientation to provide insights into teaching at Georgia Southern University.

10.       From 2002-2005, I present a Study Tips for Psychology Workshop for the Academic Success Center at least once each semester.

Service to the Community (including high-school students and teachers)

1.         Read Psychology Advance Placement (AP) Essays for the Educational Testing Service (ETS) June, 2000, to present. Promoted to Table Leader in 2006.

2.         Judged high-school psychology students’ essays in 2007.

3.         In the Fall of 2006, Dr. Larry Locker and I presented Vivid Statistics: Engaging Students with Interesting Examples as an invited presentation at the Georgia Southern University high-school teachers’ workshop on teaching psychology.

4.         In the Spring of 2005, I taught Sensation and Perception to a 5th grade class of gifted students at Brooklet Elementary School.

5.         In the Fall of 2003, I worked with a local high-school student from Southeast Bulloch to plan, conduct, and present a project on operant conditioning in rats. The student came to my laboratory approximately twice a week for the semester.

6.         From the Summer of 2001 to the Spring of 2002, I was an assistant to the instructor of              Taekwondo classes in Statesboro. Classes are designed to encourage students to be                    physically active, practice self control, and interact with others in a positive manner. Many psychological principles are applied to teach the children valuable life skills.          

7.         I worked with the Bulloch County School System to extend PSO opportunities to more students in the area. I prepared a questionnaire for students attending Southeast Bulloch, Portal, and Statesboro High Schools. In September and October of 2000, data from 1577 students were analyzed, and summaries of the data were sent to members of the Bulloch Board of Education in October. I have offered to be of service to the local school system in the future if they need additional survey construction or statistical analyses.

8.         Rape Crisis Intervention training in Savannah in 1996. Sponsored by the Statesboro Battered Women’s Shelter, for which I volunteered weekly.
