Mary  Shelley's Gothic Readings

This page is under development.  It reproduces data from Jack Lynch's "Mary Shelley's Reading" page, which draws upon (as this site does for Percy's gothic readings) The Journals of Mary Shelley: 1814-1844, ed. Paula R. Feldman and Diana Scott-Kilvert (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1987). As of this stage, the record of Mary Shelley’s Gothic readings proceeds chronologically by the date of the published work; eventually Mary’s comments (when available) on the works that she read will also be included.  As Lynch explains, “where an X occurs in the box designated for Shelley's reading, it means that we are certain that he read the text, but are not sure that Mary did as well. In such a household, however, it is unwise to surmise that many books under perusal went undiscussed by the two.”
