Teacher Websites

 1.  The Eleanor Roosevelt papers project  www.gwu.edu/~erpapers

This webpage is put together by the Department of History at the George Washington University, and was last modified in January of 2006.. This department is partners with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, NHPRC, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. This seems to be a very creditable and factual webpage for teachers to use, because of the reading level, contain. All important topics are covered, which include a biography, and year by year timeline of Eleanor’s life. This webpage is well organized and easy to use, and it also includes a special link for teachers that gave lesson plans, ideas, and books to read just for the classroom.

2.The American Experience: Eleanor Roosevelt  www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex

This webpage is part of the Public Broadcasting System online in conjunction with WGBH Educational Foundation, and new content was added in 1999. This website seems to be creditable because PBS is so well known and they receive information from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This webpage has good specific timelines on Eleanor, but I feel that the reading level is too high for third graders. But it is great for teachers, there is a link just for the teachers that has class discussions, activities and videos that can be used in the classroom. This webpage is well organized, easy to understand, and has lots of quality information.

3.First Ladies: Anna Eleanor Roosevelt www.whitehouse.gov/history/firstladies

This is the official white house webpage, the information on Eleanor Roosevelt is in association with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, and is maintained by Marist College. I found the information with no problems, the webpage is easy to navigate. It gives precise information on Eleanor’s biography, which makes it easier to comprehend. This is a good webpage for teachers because there is a link for the teacher and students. The teachers link has fun quizzes, ideas and special contacts to the Whitehouse.

   4. Eleanor Roosevelt: American Visionary www.cr.nps.gov/museum/exhibits

The National Parks Service in conjunction with the Museum Management Program made a great webpage honoring Eleanor Roosevelt. This site has great photos, and good detailed information about her life. The site is user friendly, with many links to information about her Family, Political Allies, FDR, and her cottage. The page also has a virtual tour of her cottage, this can bring you into the whole experience. I also thought this would be a good site for teachers because the reading level is not quite that of third graders, but it has good lesson plans for the teachers.

5.Eleanor Roosevelt: First Lady and Humanitarian www.lucidcafe.com

This is a webpage written by Robin Chew a graduate of California State University. It seems to be a creditable webpage the author gives his contact information for people with any questions. This webpage gives a brief biography of Eleanor Roosevelt, but what is good about this site is that it gives many links to other sites that could come of use to a teacher. On this site you can look up photos, videos and books that could be used in the classroom. I like this webpage because it gives a lot of resources to use.

Student Websites:

  1. Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/educat33.html

This is the official presidential library webpage of FDR and his wife Eleanor. It is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration, and developed in collaboration with Marist College and IBM. This is a very creditable webpage that can be accessed and used by students with ease. The page gives a brief but informative biography on Eleanor, which can be read by students at the third grade level. Also there are many educational programs/links that the students can use that include: puzzles, activities, timelines, photos, and a research guide that can help them with projects. The page is colorful and simple, and links are spelled out clearly so a child can be guided to information directly.

     2.   Women’s International Center  www.wic.org

Women’s International Center is a site made to acknowledge, honor, and encourage women. It is a non-profit education and service foundation founded in 1982. Designed by Techknow Computer Consulting, copyright 1994-2005, this San Diego based site gives information and biographies on the great women in history. This would be a good webpage for students to refer to because it does a great job of show-casing all of the wonderful deeds that Eleanor Roosevelt did. Her biography is brief, but really gets to the point on how she was a great Human Rights leader and humanitarian. Students will be able to clearly understand while getting great information, maybe realizing how much she accomplished in her life.

       3.  National Women’s Hall of Fame  www.greatwomen.org

National Women’s Hall of Fame is a webpage totally devoted to great women in history and their accomplishments. It is made possible by a grant from Choice One Communications and is also designed by Choice One Communications. The actual Women’s Hall of Fame is located in Seneca Falls, New York. I like this webpage because it is good to know that these great women were acknowledged for their achievements. It is also good because it gives great precise information on Eleanor Roosevelt. This page is easy for a student to use, they type is the woman’s name then search it, a brief description pops up, finally if the student clicks on the name a whole biography shows. This last page has quick facts that can be used if and when a student is writing a research report.

         4.  Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute  http://www.feri.org/

This is the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute webpage was founded to honor the legacies of them both. The page is partners with the FDR Library and Museum, New Deal Network, and the Roosevelt Study Center, all three creditable institutions. This is a very informative webpage, giving great biographies on Eleanor. There are actually four different biographies, so I am sure that students will be able to find what they are searching for. These include one on her Early Years, Marriage, Public Life and International Leader. Each page gives a paragraph of information, which is an easy read. But this site includes more than just biographies it has links to photos, speeches, and awards. Students can find almost anything.

        5.  Time 100: Eleanor Roosevelt  http://www.time.com/time/time100/leaders/profile/eleanor2.html

This is Time magazines website that is dedicated to the most influential figures that have been on the cover of their magazine, it was copywrited in 2003 by Time Inc. This article was written Monday April 13 1998, by Doris Kearns Goodwin Pulitzer prize winning author, who is also a historian and political analyst. She wrote a very intriguing article about Eleanor that is jam packed with good information. The article really highlights major points in her life, it might be a little long but students can still get good information.
