Going
Greek

"And Some Factors
That You May Be Concerned With"
HAZING
Many
college undergraduates these days are bombarded with the idea's that joining a
Greek organization means that you will be
hazed. According to the North American Inter-Fraternity Conference "
Hazing is the most publicly feared concept of Greek Life
today." Although
some may think that hazing means to physically abuse a pledge, the actual
definition of hazing as reported by the
N.I.C states, "Hazing can be defined as singling out
of an individual or group of people and
forcing them to do
something that is psychologically, physically, or emotionally harmful
or
damaging."
Many colleges, universities, and Greek organizations
on a national level have taken tremendous steps to
stop this act from
happening. At Georgia
Southern University
they have set up judicial boards
to oversee the
activities of these groups and have
strict rules and regulations which can
range from having a chapters charter revoked
to expelling a student from
school if they are found
to be hazing.
Poor
Grades
Many people believe that students in
Greek organizations do
in fact have poor grades . Many schools
and Greek Organization's
National Offices have scholarship opportunities for
the Greek with the best grades
as well as strict requirements for member who
are affiliated or want to join.

Georgia
Southern University Greek life for example have GPA requirements
set up
for all potential rushee's who are interested in joining these organizations
as well as rules for members in these groups such as making them
maintain certain GPA requirements if they would life to remain active in
their groups.
One organization for example, the Delta Chi Fraternity at
Georgia Southern
University have mandatory study
hours for potential members as well as
certain study hour requirements
for brothers who do not have the minimum
GPA requirements set forth by the chapter. Like many
Greek
Organizations they also reward brothers with great
GPA's with discounted
chapter dues and scholarship opportunities if they
are excelling in the
field of academics.
In an
article from the N.I.C. it states, "The stereotypical party
atmosphere is not a reality, and certainly not the norm. Due to the fact that
Greek chapters comprise the largest student organization nationwide, Greek
communities are constantly in the media spotlight. Social problems such as binge
drinking and drug use occur in nearly every facet of society, but their presence
is magnified in fraternities."
In my chapter we require all of our
potential members
to have a dry pledge period which means that they
cannot drink.
It was thought to believe that this would
create bonding
between all new members so they would find other ways
to entertain themselves other than drinking, as well as
making
sure they all get good grades.
Philanthropy
It
is thought that Greek Organizations do not do things to benefit the
communities
an schools that surround them. Despite what some
believe
Greek Organizations do numerous things for philanthropy related groups and
communities.

The Delta Chi Fraternity national
philanthropy is the Jimmy V Foundation for
cancer research. Each semester chapters
from around the nation host events
to
raise money for the charity.
On the Georgia Southern University
campus
Greek Organizations hold a huge trick or treating event for
surrounding
school kids as well as a big Easter event.
Almost all
Greek Organizations nationwide have
charities they donate to and different
things they do for the surrounding
communities.
Benefits and
Leadership
Some people believe that Greek Life has very few
benefits that come
from it except for partying. Being in a Greek
Organization
can benefit people way after they have graduated
college.
